Hi Nathan, and thanks for the note. Chris & Cherie are old friends; glad they linked you this way! As to the obstacles, there are LOTS of good deals out there to be had, thanks to an economy that has made it painful for people to keep seldom-used boats sitting idle in marinas. Auctions are common, and places like Craigslist and eBay tend to be better ways of finding the gems than brokerage/Yachtworld (though for dreaming, the latter is a goldmine). Like land yachts, a good path is to just get *something* and dive into the learning curves, enabling you to more wisely choose the next one.

Once you do... it's magic. The freedom and peace are remarkable compared to the road (though I'm learning that it's axiomatic that boat To-Do lists are never completed).

Fair winds, and hope to see you out there,
Steve

Been dreaming of moving the family out of our various RV/VW Bus/Airstream adventures and into a boat for a long time. Lack of boating (and/or boat building) experience and one million dollars is the only thing stopping us now, but I assume as we mark more and more checks off of our list of places in North America we've done so thoroughly we can't imagine doing them anymore, we'll figure it out.

Found your blog via technomadia, by the way.

I would love to sail your boat around Vancouver Island but for me it's a dream, I have never sailed and now I'm really thinking how cool it would be to learn how and maybe someday get or build a boat somewhat like yours.

I think it is brilliant what you have built and the projects you are doing are really great. I hope that I can catch a glimps of your boat if it stops in at Nanaimo harbour on Vancouver Island.

Hi Frank! Wonderful to hear from you, as always, and when you're back in the states you are invited to visit us in La Conner.

As to the headsets... yes indeed! Relationship- and boat-savers. This story would have had a much less happy ending without them:

Cheers!

Steve .... just happened by .... the best thing we ever had for anchoring was a set of headphones with full duplex transmission to allow the anchor handler to talk to the steerer/engine person in a civilized way while anchoring ..... it probably saved our marriage ..... they are acctually toys for children and have a limited range but more than enough for our use .... tried some from Radio Shack but they were crap .... I'm in England right now so can't remember the manufacturer but will be back in June for a 3 week visit and could let you know but you may be able to troll around and find them .... it really works a treat .... we also use them for backing up the fifth wheel ....

Good luck

Hmmm... I haven't tried it, but with a mix of pipe clamps and a little additional PVC, it might be possible to adapt the same stands. Picture the X up against a wall. If the top rail were attached with a couple of pipe clamps (ideally by changing the corner elbows to tees, so the clamps don't "scrunch up" the sling tunnels), and the two legs likewise are attached by using elbows to create a connecting tube, then it should work (though would not be self-adjusting except for the mesh stretch. Worth the experiment!

Cheers,

Update on the webcam - it's fixed! No more freezing. The problem was the old version of Pepwave firmware; an update solved the problem.
